It is St. Patrick’s Day, so I put on my green T-shirt with the words “Me Lucky Shirt.” Even though I can’t go to the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade (which has been cancelled), I will proudly strut down walking paths, proclaiming my Irishness for one day. Actually, I am part Scottish. My grandmother’s maiden name is McLeod. I understand there is a black and yellow plaid designed just for that particular clan.

There will be no green beer at Irish pubs today, no pinching someone if he or she is not wearing green. No fun and frivolity at parades. The nation has more serious priorities.

I believe there is such a thing as bad luck. It is bad luck when the COVID-19 virus jumps from an animal to a human. It is even more bad luck that the number of COVID-19 cases has been increasing at a much more rapid pace than previous viruses after a single introduction into the human population.

Luck is something that happens randomly and is completely out of our control. Just like any gambler in games of luck, we have to know “when to hold ‘em.” Scientists worldwide are working on a cure for this deadly disease. They hold the “wisdom” cards. The rest of us, on the other hand, hold the “patience” cards. We must be patient and follow all rules. That is our responsibility, our sacred duty. We must focus on that great day in the future when the winning hand will be played, and our luck will return.
