One of the nice things about being cooped up indoors with no place to go is a return to old-fashioned pleasures such as baking, singing together and reading. But, there’s also an outdoor activity that is a reminder of my childhood — drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. Usually, I drew a game of hopscotch. My friends and I played for a long time hopping all over the court. Other more artistic friends drew very detailed pictures of suns, trees, houses, etc.

I am proud to see that chalk drawing is making a comeback. I walk by an outdoor plaza at Vitruvian Park to find it covered with drawings and affirmations in different colors of pastel chalk. There are affirmations not only on the ground, but also on concrete pillars. It is an astounding display of uplifting emotion. There are messages thanking doctors and nurses, reminding us that we’re all in this together and encouraging us to make a neighbor laugh.

Kudos to the Uplifter of Our Souls who released his or her constructive optimism onto the concrete. It certainly brightens my day, along with many others. This collection of goodness elevates our moods and inspires us to escape our depression, be more positive and improve our relationships with others. My favorite chalk post is Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
